Shelters in Vrangeskov

Have you heard an owl hooting, come across a fox, or laid under the open sky gazing at the stars? When darkness falls, a new world of experiences opens up.

In Ringsted, there are several places where you can spend the night in nature, whether you're into shelters or tents.

In Vrangeskov, there are both shelters and an area for wild camping. Wild camping refers to areas in selected forests owned by the state, where you can set up your tent for free. There are some rules that are good to know beforehand. For example, it is only allowed to camp for one night at the same location, and open fires are only permitted in designated fire pits. For more details about the rules for wild camping, visit the Nature Agency's website. Booking a shelter at the Nature Agency in Vrangeskov is done through book.naturstyrelsen.dk.

Along the Experience Trail between Vrangeskov and Roskildevej, there is also a shelter. The shelter has a beautiful view and is located right by Haraldsted Lake. There is access via a boat bridge right in front of the shelter, and through the trail between Vrangeskov and Roskildevej. You cannot book the spot in advance, so it operates on a "first come, first served" basis. It might be a good idea to bring a tent so that you can camp in the wild camping area in Vrangeskov.

In Store Bøgeskov, there is a shelter close to Gyrstinge Lake. The shelter is owned by the Ringsted Forest Kindergarten, but it is possible to borrow it. You need to contact the kindergarten in advance. Click this link to see how.

Shelters have become more popular in recent years. If you're traveling with a group or want to avoid carrying a tent, shelters can be a great overnight option. In a shelter, you can experience what it feels like to truly sleep in the open compared to a closed tent. Some shelters are on a first-come, first-served basis, while others require booking in advance. However, it's good practice to be ready to share with hikers, cyclists, or canoeists/kayakers who need shelter for the night on their journey.

You can find an overview of all the Nature Agency’s shelters in Denmark at book.naturstyrelsen.dk. On Friluftsguiden, you'll find both municipal and private shelters. The goal is for Udinaturen to include all shelters and other facilities in Denmark, but it's not fully completed yet.

A lovely site situated about 60 m North of the road between Haraldsted and Valsømagle at the former gravel pit. Take a small path right after the first house in  the wood coming from Haraldsted. There is a small parking. Cross the small bridge over the stream and walk about 100 meters. Here you find 2 shelters, fireplace, grill, tables and benches.

You have to book in advance on www.naturstyrelsen.dk

You are not allowed to put up a tent there. But if you cross Haraldstedvej towards the lake, you are welcome to put up a small tent and stay for one night. Please remember to take away your rubbish before leaving.
